Mike Gaffney completed his fifth season as the head coach of the LIU Post baseball program in 2019.

Under Gaffney's leadership, the Pioneers have compiled a 140-94 record overall and 84-41 tally in league play.

In 2019, Gaffney was named ABCA East Region and ECC Coach of the Year after he helped guide the Pioneers to their second ECC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons along with setting a new program record for season wins with 38.

Under his tutelage in 2019, LIU Post's .857 winning percentage in ECC play topped the previous highest ECC wining percentage of .800 set by Saint Thomas Aquinas College in 2017.

With a 24-4 record in ECC games, the Pioneers also eclipsed the previous conference wins record of 22 set by Molloy College in 2011 and LIU Post in 2010.

He helped mentor All-American and ECC Rookie & Pitcher of the Year Joshua Loeschorn along with four all-region honorees and eight all-conference honorees.

Gaffney earned his 100th career win with an 8-7 victory against St. Thomas Aquinas College May 5, 2018. Also during the campaign, Gaffney helped mentor ECC Pitcher of the Year, James Varela, to new program records for single-season strikeouts and victories.

The Pioneers ended a seven-year title drought in 2017, earning the first ECC title under Gaffney. The Pioneers entered the postseason tournament as the number two seed and swept the competition en route to the conference championship. Junior Rob Andreoli was named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Player of the Year, while senior Dan Jagiello joined him on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-East Region Team. Freshman Noah Lorenzo also earned a major ECC award, garnering Co-Rookie of the Year accolades in his first season.

During his second year at the helm the Pioneers posted their first winning season since 2012. The Green and Gold boasted an overall record of 23-20 and an ECC ledger of 13-11 in 2016.

Five players went on to earn All-ECC notice, including sophomore outfielder Rob Andreoli, who was honored as a first-team selection.

In 2015, the first-year head coach led the Pioneers back to the East Coast Conference Baseball Championships for the first time since 2012, finishing the season with an overall record of 18-18, including a 14-10 mark in ECC play. The 14 conference wins were also the most since the 2012 campaign, when the Green and Gold went 16-8.

Gaffney mentored three All-ECC selections in 2015, and sophomore Jake DeCarli was named the ECC Pitcher of the Year after posting one of the finest single-season pitching performances in LIU Post history.

An infielder by trade, Gaffney played his college ball down the road at New York Institute of Technology and was drafted twice during his time with the Bears. In 2002, he was selected in the 49th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the then-Florida Marlins. A year later, the Kansas City Royals selected him in the 13th round. Gaffney would go on to play five seasons of Minor League ball within the Royals' organization, reaching the AA level in 2007.

Gaffney, who earned his bachelor's degree in Behavioral Studies from NYIT, resides in Westbury, N.Y. with his wife, Samantha and their sons Nolan and Robbie.
