Men's Basketball Pulls Out Hard Fought Double Overtime Victory Against Queens, 98-96

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2011) – After leading as much as 14 points during the second half, the men's basketball team needed two overtimes to defeat the Knights of Queens College. The Pioneers were able to hold off the Knights behind a career-performance by junior guard Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.). Bonneau turned in a career-high 39 points, going a perfect 10 for 10 from the charity stripe and hitting five from beyond the arc. 

The Pioneers went into the locker room at halftime with a slim 35-31 edge over the Knights. Bonneau came out firing during the first stanza, going five for eight from the field, including three from downtown to end the half with a game-leading 14 points. C.W. Post grew it leading margin all the way to 9 during the half, with senior guard Gilbert Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) pacing the offense with five assists in the opening half. 

The second half started off even better for the Pioneers, as they built their all the way up to 14 points a few times during the half. The last time was with after Bonneau hit one of his five three-points shot with six and half minutes left in the game. After that however, the Knights stormed back using a 14-1 run to bring the game within one points with just over two minutes to play.

Bonneau hit two free throws with 1:24 left in the half to put the Pioneers up by four. Later, after a free throw by Knight senior guard Lamonte Lans and a lay-up by fellow senior forward Terrell Simmons, the Knights had brought the game to one with just one minute left. Senior forward Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) then put the home Pioneers up three with 39 seconds remaining with a lay-up for two of 15 points during the game. 

The Knights immediately called timeout following the Hall basket, hoping to set up a game-tying play. Senior guard Anderson Labase was the open player on the play beyond the arc, nailing a three with 30 seconds left to tie the game at 79. C.W. Post had chances at the end to clinch the win, however fell just short on attempted shots. 

During the first overtime period, Queens was able to build a six point advantage with three minutes left after a dunk by junior forward Khalil McDonald. Two baskets by Bonneau, one jumper and one three, brought the Pioneers within three with just over one minute to go in overtime. After Montalvo notched one of his six steals of the day and forced the turnover on Labase, the Pioneers were able to open up left corner of the court for sophomore Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.). Carberry made good on his opportunity to play hero, as he nailed the corner three off a great find by Hall, sending the game into a second overtime as the Pioneers held off the Knights in the last 13 seconds of the period. 

Bonneau capped off his tremendous day by going six for six from the free throw line during the second overtime to help seal the victory for the Pioneers, scoring six of the Pioneers 10 points during the second overtime. Queens hit a three towards the end to bring the game within two points, but not enough time was left on the clock as the buzzer sounded with the shot going through the net.

Senior forward Akim Neverson led the Knights with a double-double, putting down 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Labase also ended the game with 19 points, and fell one assist shy of his own double-double, ending the game with nine. Lans chipped in 19 points as well, along with six assists. McDonald game out as the team scoring leader for the afternoon, ending the game with 20 points, going nine for 13 from the field. 

Bonneau's career day of 39 points led all scorers, as he went 12 for 12 from the field, including five for nine from beyond the arc and adding a perfect 10 for 10 from the line. Montalvo was the third player to achieve a double-double on the afternoon, dishing out 11 assists and hitting a free throw at the end of the second overtime to give him 10 points. The Pioneer pressure defense also is due credit for its effort, as the team was able to force 23 Knights offensive turnovers. 

The Pioneers will only have a short time to enjoy this hard fought victory, as the teams goes back to action Monday, January 10, with a 7 p.m. home match up against Bridgeport. Bridgeport entered play Saturday at top of the ECC standings, so this proves to be another battle for the Pioneers. The men will be the second part of a double-header, with the respective women teams of each school going up against each other at 5 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.
