St. John's Defeats No. 23 Men's Basketball in Exhibition Game, 110-80

Division I St. John's University used a strong start to the second half to pull away from the 23rd ranked C.W. Post men's basketball team, as the Red Storm earned a 110-80 victory in an exhibition game at Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday evening. 

The Pioneers stayed with the Red Storm early on, taking an 11-10 lead at the 16:31 mark on sophomore forward Vaughn Allen's (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) layup. 

The visitors took the lead again, 17-16, at 13:45 following a trey by graduate guard Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.), and kept the game close, staying within 4-6 points of the hosts for most of the first half.  With 5:58 to play, a Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) layup pulled the Pioneers to within four, 33-29.  But St. John's spouted off nine straight points to pull ahead 42-29, and went into halftime leading 51-40. 

St. John's shot an outstanding 23-of-35 (65.7 percent) from the floor in the first half, making 4-of-11 from deep and making up for a 1-for-5 showing from the line.  C.W. Post shot a respectable 46.9 percent (15-for-32)  from the floor, but were hurt by a 3-for-15 line from beyond the arc. 

The Red Storm used a 17-4 run to open the second half and take a 68-44 lead.  The Pioneers hurt themselves with several turnovers and defensive miscues as they were able to score only 10 points in the first ten minutes of the second half.  The visitors play improved towards the end of the half as they cut a 36 point deficit down to 22, but their Big East opponent was able to keep the game out of reach as they won by a final margin of 30 points.

Senior guard and preseason All-American Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field.  Carberry added 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting and led the Pioneers with seven rebounds, while freshman Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) had a productive outing with 15 points and six boards. 

Six St. John's players scored in double figures, led by 21 points from God'sgift Achiuwa.  SJU got 20 points apiece from Phil Greene and D'Angelo Harrison.  Moe Harkless registered a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Nurideen Lindsey scored 16 and Sir'Dominic Pointer chipped in with12.

C.w. Post will play another exhibition against a Division I school as it travels to UConn for a matchup against the Huskies on Sunday, Nov 6 at 1 p.m.
