Men's Basketball Declaws Dowling, 77-67

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2012) - Senior guard
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) paced four Pioneers in double digits in a 77-67 East Coast Conference victory over Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Dowling Gymnasium.
The Pioneers even at 3-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action, while Dowling falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in ECC play.
The Pioneers wasted little time in jumping out to a double digit advantage just seven minutes into the game, as two free throws by junior
JaMario Clayton (Durham, N.C.) gave the Pioneers a 22-12 lead.
But the Golden Lions game roaring back courtesy of a 12-2 spurt to tie the game at 24 apiece. The Pioneers responded, snapping out of the brief offensive slump, and went back to work, pushing out to a nine-point advantage (39-30) with just over two minutes left in the half, and the visitors went into the half holding a seven points advantage, 42-35.
The Pioneers led wire-to-wire in the second half, as the hosts twice whittled the lead to just seven, only to see LIU Post storm back for a double-digit advantage that maxed out at as many as 16 points (75-59) as the Pioneers earned the ten-point victory.
Carberry's scoring came off a 7-15 performance from the floor, including two three pointers and nine rebounds. Clayton scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting, hitting 3-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) added 14 points, while junior
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points and eight boards.
The Pioneers shot relatively well from the floor, 53.6% (29-54) compared to Dowling's 36.2% (25-60). The hosts also fared better on the glass, as they outrebounded the Golden Lions by a 39-35 margin. Both teams did not fare well in assists-turnovers, with the Pioneers posting a 10-18 ratio and Dowling managing just six assists to 11 turnovers. The Pioneers also fared a hair better in the paint, with a 32-28 advantage.
The Golden Lions were led by Corwin Austin and Josh Malone, who each scored 18 for the home team.
The next contest for the Pioneers is a 7 p.m. contest on the road on Monday, Dec. 10 against Felician.
