Men's and Women's Basketball Senior Day To Take Place Saturday Against the District of Columbia
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2012)
– Saturday will mark the season-finale for both the men's and women's basketball teams as the Pioneers host the Firebirds of the District of Columbia.
Prior to each game, the Pioneers will honor the seniors of each team as a part of “Senior Day.”
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) will be honored from the women's team while
Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.),
Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.), and
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) are set to be recognized for the men's team.
The women's team has not played since last Saturday, earning a convincing 90-42 victory at Molloy, improving to 19-8 and 10-5 in the ECC. The Pioneers helped generate the win behind a 54-24 rebounding advantage that also helped lead to 19 second chance points while not giving up any to Molloy. The team also accumulated 18 assists on 30 field goals made.
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) and
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) each tallied 14 points with
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) contributing 12 points and six assists. As a team, the Pioneers went 24-28 from the free throw line.
C.W. Post's scoring average is now up to 74.6 points per game when opponents are only scoring 64.1 points against the Pioneers. The offense has been helped by a 15.8 assist per game average and have also outrebounded teams by an average of 9.2 boards per game. The defense has also played well with 9.6 steals per game and 3.3 blocks per game. The Pioneers have also been successful at home this season, with a 9-2 overall record in the Pratt Recreation Center.
Playing 33.8 minutes per game and converting on a team lead 83 free throws, Joyner continues to be the top scorer with 17.1 points per game.
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has equaled her point per game and rebounding per game average at 9.9 per side. Kopp and Lutz have each totaled 8.6 point per game average, with Kopp pulling 7.3 boards per game and generating 33 total blocks while Lutz has knocked down 46 total three-pointers this season.
The women's squad from the District of Columbia enters play as the number 23 ranked team in the nation with a 21-4 record and first place 12-3 conference mark. The Firebirds are also coming off a win over Molloy, defeating the Lions 70-51 this past Wednesday. As a team, the Firebirds came up with 33 points off of 23 turnovers, helped by 12 steals. The squad also shot 42.1 percent from downtown with eight shots made from that range. Janelle Junior scored 17 points and came up with three steals with Lauren Brittingham coming up with 12 points and six assists.
The District of Columbia holds a 68.6 scoring average, which accounts towards a 10.4 scoring margin over opponents. The scoring average is helped by 6.4 three-pointers made a game with the team also forcing 24.6 turnovers to help turn defense into offense. The turnovers are spurred by a 13.0 steal per game average.
With the team's top scorer being out for more than half of the season, Brittingham has stepped in with 13.7 points per game and has led the team with 4.4 assists a game. Junior has also improved her play, knocking down 44 shots from three to help accumulate a 9.6 point per game mark. Dohnay Banice has shot 57.7 percent from the field, totaling 9.4 points per game with a 7.8 rebounding average as well.
Back on Jan. 21, the District of Columbia pulled out a 75-72 victory over the Pioneers. Brittingham led all scorers with 23 points to go along with seven assists and seven steals. Banice totaled a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Caggiano knocked down four three-pointers to pace the Pioneers, notching 18 points.
The C.W. Post men's basketball will return to action on Saturday after improving to 20-5 and 14-1 in the conference with Monday's 87-53 win over Dowling. The Pioneers used a 46-22 rebounding advantage as well as shooting 52.8 percent from the field with 14 assists. Bonneau scored 25 points while also dishing out six assists and the frontcourt of
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) combined to scored 29 points and pull in 20 rebounds.
The win also helped the team improve to 7-0 at home this season in conference, as well 9-2 overall. During the first half of play of games this season, the Pioneers have outscored teams by 6.7 points per game that has helped lead to a positive 10.8 scoring margin. This is also been benefited by an 18.8 free throws made per game clip.
Bonneau has continued to be the top scorer in the ECC with a 22.0 point per game average. His scoring has been greatly attributed to a 38.8 percentage from three, as Bonneau has knocked down 69 shots from beyond the arc. Scoring off the dribble and from distance,
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) registers 17.9 points per game to help the offense, as well as grabbing 5.8 boards per game. Allen leads the team in rebounding with 9.1 boards a game and is also contributing 15.0 points per game. From the point guard position, Coleman is leading the team with 3.8 assists a game and has also tallied 35 steals.
The District of Columbia men's basketball team comes into play with a 22-3 overall record that includes a 13-2 conference mark after Wednesday's 109-78 win over Molloy. The Firebirds offense came up with 26 assists to help the team shoot 56.3 percent from the field and that shooting included 17 three-pointers made. Dishawn Bradshaw and Brandon Herbert combined to make 13 of those threes and each scored 28 points. Nigel Munson dished out 16 assists to go with his 12 points.
Holding teams to 70.5 points per game, the Firebirds have managed to average 83.6 points per game on the offensive end. As a team, the District of Columbia has shot 37.3 percent from three and is tallying 15.0 assists a game. On the defensive end, the Firebirds have rejected 6.0 shots a game.
Herbert comes into Saturday with 20.0 points per game average as he is knocking down 3.5 threes a game and is shooting 40.0 percent to go with 5.1 rebounds per game. Munson is scoring 19.9 points per game while also leading the conference in assists at 6.8 a game and is pulling in 5.6 rebounds. Bradshaw has converted 3.7 free throws a game, which helped him boost a 14.3 scoring average.
In a tight contest, the Pioneers came away with a 92-85 win at the District of Columbia on Jan. 21. C.W. Post knocked down 30 free throws to help create a margin, as well as holding a plus-10 edge on the boards. Bonneau scored a team-high 32 points, with Allen going for 23 points and 13 rebounds. Williams grabbed a game-high 17 boards for the Pioneers. Munson led the game in scoring with 35 points and dished out four assists. Herbert contributed 21 points.
