Men's Basketball Falls To Adelphi, 66-65, In NCAA East Quarterfinal

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 10, 2012) – Adelphi University's Norron McDonald scored a layup with three seconds remaining in regulation to clinch a 66-65 victory over C.W. Post in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Men's East Regional Saturday afternoon at Assumption College's Laska Gym.
 
Adelphi improves its record to 21-8 and will advance to play the winner of District of Columbia/Stonehill on Sunday.  C.W. Post ends its season with an overall record of 23-6.
 
Sophomore forward Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led all scorers with a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, including 10-13 shooting from the charity stripe.  Junior guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) and freshman Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) each scored 13 points for the Pioneers.
 
Bradley Simpson led the Panthers with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Chris Ranglin registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Norron McDonald added 12 points while teammate Richard Harkins scored 10 points and added a game-high eight assists.
 
It was a back and forth first half as both teams exchanged the lead five times with three tie-ups.  The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-6 start before the Panthers tied it three straight baskets. 
 
Carberry drilled his second three-pointer of the game at 12:08 that put the Pioneers back on top, 14-11.  Adelphi answered back with a pair of buckets from Harkins and Bradley Simpson to reclaim the lead at 15-14.
 
With 8:17 to play, senior guard Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.) swished a three then added another after a free throw from Allen to push the Pioneers' lead to six (21-15) with 6:42 to play. 
 
Adelphi once again tied it up with a trey from Simpson at 4:22 before C.W. Post's Williams hit a jumper at 3:15.  The Panthers tied the game up two more times and took the lead with an open three from Ranglin with two seconds on the clock to lead 29-26 at the half.
 
In the second half, the Panthers kept their lead intact through the first six and a half minutes of play and built it as high as eight (45-37) after a jumper from Travis Jordan a 15:34.
 
The Pioneers climbed back with an 11-2 run to take a 46-45 lead at 13:15.  Adelphi came back and tied the score at 50-50 on an and-one from Harkins at 9:46.
 
C.W. Post reclaimed the lead after a short jumper from Allen at 9:31.  The Panthers tied the game up with a pair of free throws from McDonald at 8:05 before Bonneau converted pair at 6:19 to give the Pioneers the edge.
 
From there, C.W. Post built its lead up to seven with 2:25 to play but could not convert on another shot as Adelphi played relentlessly and came from behind with an 8-0 run to win the game.  McDonald's shot came off his own rebound after a missed attempt from Ranglin at the 7-second mark.
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting 20-48 from the field (.417), including 4-14 behind the arc, and was 21-29 at the line.  Adelphi shot 26-28, including 6-22 from long range, and was 8-11 at the line.  The Pioneers held a 38-37 edge on the glass.
