Both Basketball Teams In Action Saturday
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2013) – Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be in action Saturday, Feb. 2 as they host East Coast Conference foe Molloy College in the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-offs are set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
The LIU Post women's basketball team is currently enjoying a 16-game home win streak dating back to last season, most recently grinding out a 59-50 victory over No. 17 Dowling College Wednesday night. Senior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) lead the Pioneer offense as both have scored in double-digits at least 11 times this season. Marciniak is nearly averaging a double-double with 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while Peters is averaging 10.7 points per game. Right behind the pair is sophomore
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) and senior
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) who are averaging 9.2 and 8.7 points per game. Rounding out the top five scorers for the Pioneers is senior
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.). Kopp is currently averaging 8.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 38.6% (433-1122) from the floor, including 29.7% (89-300) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers have been tremendous on the glass, out-rebounding their opponents 814-652 for a margin of +9.0. Also the combination of Kopp and Marciniak has helped the squad to 4.2 blocks per game, while their opponents have registered a mere 2.3 blocks per game.
Currently on a two game losing streak, the women's basketball team of Molloy College is led by four players averaging 9.0+ points per game, including senior guard Christina Marra who is currently averaging 9.7 points. Ashley Addison, Kelly Guerriero, and Alex Hampton are right behind averaging 9.6, 9.5, and 9.5 points per game, respectively. Forward Ikema Ross is the only Lion with success on the glass, currently averaging 9.2 rebounds per game. As a whole, the Lions are shooting 33.2% (367-1107) from the field, including 30.4% (273-408) from downtown. The Lions' opponents have out-rebounded them on the season 826-770 for a margin of -5.9.
On the men's side, the Pioneers are seeking to put some distance between them and Molloy College in the conference standings, with both teams currently owning an 8-2 conference record. Senior
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) leads the Pioneers with an ECC best 18.1 points per game, while junior
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) is right behind with 17.3 points per game. Senior
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) is the final Pioneer averaging double figures, with 12.4 points per game. Allen is the top performer on the glass, pulling down 9.0 boards per game, and sophomore
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) is adding a strong 7.7 rebounds per game. Senior
Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) leads the conference in assists averaging 5.1 per game. The Pioneers are shooting 47.1% from the floor (505-1072) and are averaging 13.9 assists per game while out-rebounding opponents by an astounding +10.4 margin.
Molloy has won seven of its last eight games, most recently overcoming St. Thomas Aquinas by a score of 64-61 Wednesday night, and has an overall record of 12-6 and 8-2 in conference action. The Lions' John Petrucelli and Jimmy Nolan are scoring in double figures, averaging 14.4 and 10.4, respectively. Petrucelli is also the Lions' rebounding leader, grabbing an average of 7.5 per game. The Lions are averaging 66.2 points per game, shooting at a 40.6% clip and averaging 38.7 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game.
