Carberry Boosts Men's Basketball Past Queens, 78-60
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (February 6, 2013) – Senior guard
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Pioneers and help the LIU Post men's basketball defeat Queens College, 78-60, on Wednesday evening at Fitzgerald Gym.
Trailing 7-6 at the 15:43 mark, the Pioneers scored 13 of the next 15 points in the contest to take a 19-9 lead with 9:48 to play in the half. The visitors capped what turned into a 23-5 run with a jumper by sophomore
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) that saw the Pioneers lead 30-13 with 4:57 left on the clock.
Coming out of the halftime break with a 40-25 lead, the Knights were able to trim the lead to single digits after two free throws by George Holmes made it a 48-40 contest at the 14:35 mark, but the Pioneers again pushed the lead back to as many as 15 (57-42 at 11:12).
Queens threatened again as they cut the lead all the way down to six (65-57) after Holmes again hit two free throws with 5:04 on the clock, but the Pioneers would hold the Knights scoreless as they engineered a decisive 13-0 run to close out the game, with Queens finally hitting their last bucket of the game with only four seconds left.
Carberry was joined in double figure scoring by
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) with 16 points, and
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.), who added 10. Williams and freshman
Emile Blackman (Dix Hills, N.Y.) each chipped in with nine points.
Holmes led the Knights with 19 points, and Abe Akanmu and Patrick Modzelewski both added 13 apiece.
The next contest for the Pioneers is a home matchup against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
