BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2014) - The LIU Post men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 win over East Coast Conference foe UDC on Wednesday at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.
 
The Pioneers (5-3-1, 2-1-1 ECC) and Firebirds (5-3-1, 2-1-0 ECC) battled through wet conditions all afternoon. LIU Post scored both of its goals in the first 45 minutes, while the Firebirds were able to break through midway into the second half.
 
In the seventh minute, junior Per Forgaard's (Stavanger, Norway) tackle led to an offensive rush. The junior found graduate Dale McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) in stride and McDonald was able to beat the UDC keeper for the early 1-0 advantage.
 
Later, in the 42nd minute, senior Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) found freshman Harry Pearse (Berkshire, London, England) at the top of the box. Pearse fired a shot that banged off the keeper and floated into the net for a 2-0 edge.
 
At the break, the Pioneers held an 11-6 shot advantage and a 6-2 corner kick edge. The green and gold seemed to set the pace throughout the first 45 minutes of action.
 
In the second half, UDC came out looking to get on the board. In the 75th minute, Elio Hernandez was able to collect a rebound and put one past LIU Post's keeper, junior Kevin LaBarbera (Miller Place, N.Y.).
 
That was all the Firebirds would get, however, as LaBarbera made six saves in the 90 minutes to preserve the win.
 
Both teams stepped up the physical play in the second half, as four yellow cards were issued, three to UDC.
 
Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Oct. 4), when they host ECC rival Queens at Pioneer Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
