BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2014) - The LIU Post men's soccer team used a balanced offensive attack Sunday afternoon to beat East Coast Conference foe Queens, 2-1, at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.

The Pioneers (6-3-1, 3-1-1 ECC) got goals from senior Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) and graduate student Dale McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.), while Lawrence Nikaj scored the Knights' (1-6-0, 1-4-0 ECC) lone goal.

In the 20th minute, Austboe received a feed from junior Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway). He deposited the ball into the lower left corner with a quick shot that beat Queens' keeper, James Brostowski.

That would be the only marker during the first 45 minutes of play. LIU Post held a 9-3 shot advantage and a 2-1 corner kick edge. Both keepers, Brostowski for Queens and junior Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) for LIU Post, made two saves in the opening half.

In the latter stanza, both teams picked up the intensity. In the 68th minute, McDonald was able to break away from the defense after junior Matias Ruiz (Southampton, N.Y.) found the streaking graduate student with an outlet pass. McDonald beat Brostowski to the lower left, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 cushion.

Over the next 20 minutes of play, the Knights and Pioneers battled for control of the ball. In the 82nd minute, Nikaj drove home a loose ball in front of the net to cut the LIU Post lead in half.

That was all Queens would get, however, as the green and gold stepped it up on the defensive side of the ball. After the goal, the Pioneers held the Knights shotless for the final eight-plus minutes of action.

Austboe, McDonald and Forgaard led the offensive charge with two shots on goal each. Malmstrom made two saves to earn his fifth win of the season.

Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and his LIU Post squad return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 8), when they face Wilmington in a road match-up in Wilmington, Del. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
