NEWARK, Del. (Oct. 8, 2014) - The LIU Post men's soccer team used a solid defensive effort in a 1-0 win over Wilmington in a non-conference match-up at the WU Athletic Complex in Newark.
The Pioneers (7-3-1) have now won three in a row after an East Coast Conference draw with NYIT on Sept. 27.
In the 30th minute, the Pioneers were awarded a free kick just outside the box. As the kick was sent in, a Wildcat (6-5) defender got a foot on it, causing the ball to go high into the air. As the ball came down towards the near post, senior
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) was able to head the ball away from the Wildcat keeper and eventually put a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Throughout the rest of the match, the Pioneer defense was able to hold off the Wilmington attack. The Wildcats managed to get off 14 total shots, three of which were on target. LIU Post junior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) stood tall to protect his fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Pioneers held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks, while the Wildcats outshot LIU Post, 14-12.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Oct. 11), when they host ECC rival Bridgeport at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville, N.Y. The opening kick is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
