BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the LIU Post women's soccer team extended its winning streak to 10 games with an impressive 2-1 win over East Coast Conference foe and No. 23 Bridgeport at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Pioneers (10-1, 5-0 ECC) found themselves down late in the first half, as Bridgeport (7-2-1, 3-2 ECC) scored with just four minutes to go before the break. After a cross was knocked away by LIU Post keeper
Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland), Lauren Mengel headed it home to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead.
Bridgeport controlled the pace for much of the opening stanza. The Purple Knights outshot the Pioneers, 10-8. Agnarsdottir made three saves in the first 45 minutes, while neither team recorded a corner kick.
LIU Post came out determined in the second half. In the 54th minute, the Pioneers went on the attack. Senior
Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) found junior
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) in the box with a cross. Vistnes then passed it on to senior
Morgan Kitton (Bellmore, N.Y.), who found the back of the net to tie it at 1-all. The goal marked the second-straight game in which Kitton has scored.
Less than 10 minutes later, Kitton found Vistnes with a great outlet pass. Vistnes dribbled through the Bridgeport defense, and beat the keeper for the 2-1 lead. The goal was Vistnes' fourth in her last two games after recording a hat trick against Wilmington on Thursday (Oct. 9).
Throughout the rest of the match, senior
Rebecca Swedberg (Stockholm, Sweden) led a back line that continously denied a strong offensive attack from the Purple Knights. Swedberg came away with numerous tackles and was able to keep Bridgeport away from the goal. The Pioneer defense did not allow a shot over the final 7:59 of play.
Agnarsdottir recorded a season-high five saves in the win. LIU Post only managed two shots on goal, but they both found the mesh behind the Bridgeport keeper.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 15), when they host ECC rival Dowling in a conference tilt. The opening kick is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
