BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2014) - On Tuesday afternoon, Alex Billington's (Preston, England) header gave the LIU Post men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over East Coast Conference rival Dowling at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.

The Pioneers (9-3-1, 5-1-1 ECC) and Golden Lions (6-5-1, 3-3-1 ECC) started their match with both sides fighting to end the scoreless first half. Both squads were quick on the counterattack and moved the ball deep into each others' defensive thirds.

At the end of the opening stanza, Dowling was outshooting LIU Post, 6-5, while the Pioneers won eight corner kicks to the Golden Lions' three.

It wasn't until the second half that green and gold managed to break the tie. Junior forward Alfred Lindberg (Grabo, Sweden) coralled a blocked shot and buried his second goal of the season.

Roughly four minutes later, Dowling responded with the equalizer, as Jose Herrera managed to take advantage of a Pioneer turnover just outside the box.

With the score knotted at 1-all in the 70th minute, junior midfielder Matias Ruiz (Southampton, N.Y.) sent a corner kick into the box, where Billington was able to get his head on the ball and send it into the net for his first goal of 2014.

Throughout the rest of the match, the Pioneer defense was able to hold off a strong Dowling attack. Junior keeper Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) made three saves to secure LIU Post's fifth-straight win.

The green and gold managed to outshoot their oppositon, 16-10, and maintained a 13-3 edge in the corner kick department, illustrating the Pioneers' time of possesion prowess.

Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to the pitch Saturday (Oct. 18), when they travel to Philadelphia U. for a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
