WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Mar. 13, 2014) - The LIU Post softball team split a pair of games on Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games, held at the Auburndale Sports Complex in Winter Haven, Fla. The Pioneers opened with a 5-2 victory over Ohio Dominican, then fell to No. 8 Wayne State, 5-0.

In game one, the green and gold fell behind early as ODU's (3-15) Alex Cribari scored an unearned run in the top of the second. The Pioneers (3-3) would tie it up, though, in the bottom half of the frame when junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and sophomore designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) stroked back-to-back doubles.

The Panthers answered right back in the next inning with another unearned run, but in the bottom of the fourth, freshman first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated junior right fielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.), who was running for Swantek.

LIU Post pulled away in the sixth after tacking on three more runs in three straight at-bats. With runners on first and second, McCoy doubled to left-center and knocked in Swantek. Senior pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) followed with a single to left field that scored pinch runner Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.), who was running for freshman second baseman Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.). To round out the scoring, junior left fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) singled through the right side to plate pinch runner Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.).

Weber earned her second win of the year, tossing a complete game. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Havens and Swantek finished the contest with three hits apiece. Gonzalez added two hits. McCoy led the way with two runs knocked in.

In Game Two, Wayne State (17-3) jumped on the board with two first-inning runs on a double from Julie Ingratta. The Warriors added a third run in the fourth when Devin Hentschel doubled to left-center, plating pinch runner Catherine Rayos from third base.

Another two runs by Wayne State in the sixth put the game away as the Pioneers only managed two hits in the contest by Gonzalez and Swantek. Peet reached base three times, drawing a walk in each of her AB's.

Junior Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) was saddled with the loss as she tossed three and one-third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The Warriors' Lindsay Butler (8-2) earned the win with a complete game two-hitter. She walked just four Pioneers, while fanning 14.

The Pioneers close out their Rebel Spring Games trip on Saturday (Mar. 13) at the Auburndale Sports Complex in Winter Haven, Fla. They take on St. Cloud State and Concordia - St. Paul at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
