BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2014) - The No. 18 LIU Post softball team managed a 3-2 victory in Game Two in order to salvage a split with East Coast Conference nemesis Queens on Tuesday afternoon at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y.

As a result, the Pioneers are now 36-6 on the season, including a 22-2 mark in league action, while the Knights' record moves to 28-14 overall and 16-8 in conference.

The opener was scoreless through three innings, until a two-run homer by Kaitlin Crowley in the fourth opened the scoring for the visitors. The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the frame as freshman first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) sent her second solo shot in as many days over the fence in left.

After the Knights added a run in the top of the fifth, the green and gold took the lead at 4-3 when senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) drilled a three-run roundtripper into the bleachers in left field.

Queens answered back with three runs in the sixth though and six more in the seventh to put the game out of reach at 12-4.

Senior outfielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was the lone Pioneer to record two hits in the matinee.

Isabelle Yaroch pitched 2.1 innings in relief for Queens to earn the win and improve to 14-7.

Game Two had much less scoring, but both sides crossed the plate in the first inning. After leading off the game with an infield single, Cat Pastor came around to score on a wild pitch.

LIU Post took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. A one-out single to left by senior second baseman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.), followed by a double to right center by Gonzalez, brought home the first run. After two walks and a groundout loaded the bases, McCoy legged out an infield single to force home Gonzalez.

The Knights tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a home run to left by Melissa Natale, but once again the Pioneers managed to load the bases and score on an infield single, this time off the bat of junior outfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), allowing pinch runner Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) to score on the play.

That proved to be the winning run as freshman hurler Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) sat Queens down in order in the final inning. The rookie improved to 15-0 in the circle, tossing a complete game. She surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks while fanning seven.

Junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and McCoy each finished the contest 2-for-3.

The Pioneers return to action on Thursday (Apr. 24), when they head to West Haven, Conn. for a non-conference twinbill at New Haven. Play is slated to start at 3 p.m.
