OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2014) - The 16th-ranked LIU Post softball team split a pair of games at neighboring NYIT on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener, 7-0, before falling in the nightcap by a score of 7-3.

The Pioneers (39-7, 23-3 ECC) piled on five runs in the top of the first inning of Game One. Senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) kickstarted the scoring as she hammered a three-run homer to center. Later in the frame, freshman first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) doubled home junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.). Sophomore third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) followed with an RBI knock of her own, plating sophomore designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.).

Senior outfielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) lifted a roundtripper to straightaway center with one out in the second inning to extend her squad's lead to 6-0.

The visitors tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when Gonzalez reached on an NYIT error that allowed pinch runner Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) to score.

Senior hurler Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) improved to 18-3 in the circle as she tossed five innings of one-hit, one-walk, three-strikeout ball. Sophomore Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) worked the final two frames without allowing a hit and fanning two.

Hagenah was the lone Pioneer to record multiple hits as she finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs.

LIU Post once again secured an early lead in Game Two as Gonzalez singled home junior left fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), who led off the game with a triple.

In the next frame, junior outfielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) registered a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Havens plated her with a single up the middle.

Another RBI single back through the box in the third scored the Pioneers' third run, this one coming off the bat of Swantek.

But, in the bottom of the inning, Sonia Marin hit a two-run home run to bring NYIT within one.

The Bears took the lead (7-3) in the bottom of the fourth as they scored five runs after freshman pitcher Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) had retired the first two batters of the inning.

Monet Ormsby earned the complete-game win for NYIT, surrendering three runs on eight hits and two walks.

Havens finished with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, notching a run scored and an RBI.

The Pioneers close out the regular season Sunday (Apr. 27), when they host ECC rival Dowling on "Senior Day" at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y. Play is slated to begin at noon.
