WEST HAVEN, Conn. (May 9, 2014) - A sixth-inning RBI double off the bat of senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) in Game One of the NCAA East Regional was enough for the top-seeded LIU Post softball team to advance past Wilmington by a score of 1-0 on Friday at the UNH Softball Field in West Haven, Conn.

The match-up was quite the pitchers' duel as the game was scoreless through the first five and one-half innings.

The Wildcats (28-25) were unable to put anything together offensively off of the Pioneers' hurler Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.), who surrendered just two hits without allowing a walk. The Wildcats did manage to get a runner to third base in the top of the first, but that was all as only two more WU batters reached base during the remainder of the contest.

LIU Post had a runner on third with two outs in both the first and third innings, but was unable to make anything happen until the bottom of the sixth.

After a lead-off single to right by senior second baseman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.), senior Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) came on to pinch run. Senior outfielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) successfully advanced Julich to second via a sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Hagenah. On an 0-1 pitch, Hagenah drilled a double off the left-field fence to push home Julich for the game's only run.

Stephanie Sarris (16-9) held the Pioneer offense in check for most of the match-up as she pitched six innings of one-run, five-hit, one-strikeout ball.

Junior outfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), Carmine, Gonzalez, Hagenah, and sophomore third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) each recorded a hit on the day for the green and gold.

The Pioneers advance to face the winner of New Haven versus Southern New Hampshire. They will face off on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UNH Softball Field in West Haven, Conn.
