UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2015) - On Sunday, the LIU Post baseball team split an East Coast Conference double dip with Molloy, dropping the opener, 4-2, before taking the nightcap, 3-0, at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
In the first game, Molloy (9-11, 3-4 ECC) got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Lions would add another run in the third to widen their lead to 3-0.
LIU Post (7-6, 5-2 ECC) broke through in the seventh though. WIth the bases loaded and one out, sophomore catcher
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) plated two runs with a single to center. Red-shirt senior outfielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and junior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) came around to score, making it a 3-2 game.
The Lions, however, tacked on a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, and pitcher Alex Brosnan threw 133 pitches in the complete-game win.
Bowers led the offense with two hits, while Fagan drove in the two LIU Post runs. Red-shirt senior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) and Maccarone also had hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers turned to red-shirt senior
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.). All McCarthy did was turn in a complete-game, two-hit shutout to earn his second win of the season.
The green and gold took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Lions in the second inning. With sophomore centerfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) on first and sophomore catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) up, Asbaty laid down a bunt that Molloy's Kevin Podell fielded, but threw wildly to first. Daley was able to come all the way home and Asbaty moved up to second. He later scored when junior first basemen
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) smacked a single to center, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Then, in the fourth, Brunetti singled through the right side of the infield, allowing senior shortstop
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) to score, making it 3-0 in favor of LIU Post.
McCarthy went the distance, allowing just two hits and walking one, while striking out four. Brunetti and graduate left-fielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) had two hits each. Groeneveld, Alessi and Bowers also added knocks in the win.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers wrap up their four-game set with Molloy on Monday (Mar. 30) at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
