DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2015) - The LIU Post softball team battled back after losing an extra-inning Game One to secure an East Coast Conference Game Two victory over Mercy College. The Pioneers stand at a 16-7 overall and 12-1 conference record.
The Pioneers were on the board first, as a
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) solo blast to left field gave the green and gold a one-run advantage in the fifth frame. The Mavericks (6-24) answered back in the sixth, as a RBI single evened things up at one, and sent the contest into extra-innings. The stalemate remained until a Mercy double in the eighth secured the Maverick win.
Sophomore
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser, fanning seven and walking none in a 7.2 inning showing.
The nightcap saw an early LIU Post score, as sophomore left fielder
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) flied out to right in the first inning, helping senior
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) cross the plate. The home squad answered back immediatley, as a Maverick homer in the latter half of the frame tied the game at one. A two-run McCoy dinger in the second proved to be the only other offense the Pioneers needed, as LIU Post clinched the Game Two win 3-2.
Junior hurler
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was credited with the win, advancing her 2015 campaign to a 4-2 mark. She struck out five and walked just one.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and LIU Post softball returns to the field Sunday, Apr. 12, when they are set to face ECC opponent Dowling College in their inaugural Make-A-Wish double header in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
