Laurino, Belfiore Selected to NFF Hampshire Honor Society

IRVING, Texas (Apr. 30, 2015) - On Wednesday, red-shirt senior quarterback Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) and red-shirt senior defensive lineman Dan Belfiore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) were the latest members of the LIU Post football team to be inducted into the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society.

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program by greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The initiative has honored 5,744 student-athletes since its inception, and the program has experienced growth every year in either members or school participation since its launch in 2007.

Laurino and Belfiore join past Pioneer recipients Tommy Williams (2014), Grayson Laurino (2013), John Siopa (2012), Andrew Jackson (2012) and Lou Scala (2012).

In order to be eligible for membership, the student-athlete must be a starter or significant contributor in their final year of eligibility, achieve a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and meet all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

Laurino's 2015 campaign re-wrote the record books at LIU Post. He quarterbacked the Pioneers to a Northeast-10 Conference Championship and the program's first NCAA Division II Tournament berth in nearly a decade. From under center, the Boise native passed for 3,565 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also dialing his own number for a team-leading 609 rushing yards and 19 TD's.

Laurino shattered several team records in the process. He broke the program's single-season marks for pass completions and total offense, as well as the career marks for passing yards (9,673), completions (853) and passing touchdowns (86). Furthermore, Laurino compiled an all-time total of 11,191 yards of total offense, making him the only player in LIU Post football history to amass over 10,000 yards of total offense in a career.

The signal-caller's efforts earned him a nod as the Northeast-10 Most Valuable Player and a finalist for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy, which is presented to the top collegiate football player in Division II.

Belfiore's year in the trenches culminated in a selection to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America second-team. He had 65 tackles (29 solo, 36 assist), 4.5 sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries in 2014.
