MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 19, 2015) - The LIU Post football team made it three straight wins Saturday, following a 24-21 victory against Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action at Grappone Stadium.
The win improved the Pioneers to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in NE-10 play. It is the green and gold's first 3-0 start since 2002. That season, LIU Post went 11-1 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Trailing by one possession (7-3) in the third quarter, the Pioneers staged a quick three-minute drive to grab a 10-7 lead with 6:58 to go. The visitors utilized their ground game in the effort, rushing for 37 yards and a pair of first downs, before junior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.) connected with red-shirt junior wideout
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) on a 15-yard toss for the go-ahead touchdown.
The LIU Post defense then came up with an interception on its next series to set the stage for another scoring drive. Red-shirt junior defensive back
Kareem Folkes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked off a Yianni Gavalas (Manhasset, N.Y.) pass on third down from the Pioneers' 49-yard line.
The green and gold capitalized on the turnover, as Kidd put together a 14-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard run into the end zone by red-shirt freshman running back
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.). That extended the LIU Post lead to 17-7 at the conclusion of 45 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, however, Saint Anselm (1-2, 1-1 NE-10) put up 14 unanswered points to go back ahead (21-17) at the 9:37 mark.
The Pioneers fired right back though. Kidd, after starting the series just short of midfield, found Hubbard again. This time, a 23-yard hook-up between the pair put the visitors in front for good.
The Hawks had a late opportunity to either tie the game or re-take the lead, but a key strip of Saint Anselm's Elad Covaliu (Rockville, Md.) by red-shirt senior linebacker
Brandon Cheney (Hewlett, N.Y.) kept the hosts off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Kidd finished the afternoon 26-of-45 for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Pierre paced the ground attack, rushing for 52 yards and a TD. Hubbard hauled in six catches for 73 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Defensively, red-shirt sophomore defensive back
Freddrick McMillan (Bronx, N.Y.) led all players with 13 tackles (three solo, 10 assist). Cheney recorded 10 tackles (five solo, five assist) and forced two fumbles. Red-shirt junior linebacker
Wayne Harris (Jamaica, N.Y.) added six tackles (two solo, four assist).
Head Coach
Bryan Collins and his LIU Post squad now return home to face Stonehill College next Saturday (Sept. 26) in an NE-10 showdown at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
