BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 4, 2015) - On Friday, the No. 21 LIU Post women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a dramatic 3-2 win in overtime, defeating Southern Connecticut State University at Knights Field, as part of the Bridgeport Soccer Classic.
The Owls (0-1) got off to a quick start, as Victoria Conde (Madrid, Spain) scored the first goal of the game less than four minutes into action.
The Pioneers (1-0) responded just before the end of the half though. In the 37th minute, freshman forward
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) netted the equalizer and her first collegiate goal off an assist from senior forward
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) to tie it at 1-all.
During the latter half, sophomore midfielder
Shannon Walter (West Islip, N.Y.), with the score still tied, sent in a long shot after a scramble to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Pioneers at the 14:21 mark.
Three minutes later, however, Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, Conn.) found the back of the mesh for Southern Connecticut off a low shot from the right side of the box to knot the score at 2-all.
Both teams had chances to score before the end of regulation, but a Walter shot sailed high and junior keeper
Felicia Orderud (Gothenburg, Sweden) made a save with just over three minutes to go to send it to overtime.
In the extra session, Huntzinger fed a pass to Vistnes at the top of the box and the senior from Norway sent the Pioneers home winners.
In all, LIU Post outshot SCSU (14-11) and dominated the corner kick battle (6-0). Orderud and senior starter
Katelyn Phillips (Littleton, Colo.) combined for five saves in the victory.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to action on Sunday (Sept. 6), when they take on American International College in a non-conference tilt in Bridgeport. The opening kick is slated for 3 p.m.
