NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 15, 2016) - Down 13-0 in the second quarter, the No. 14 LIU Post football team came from behind to earn a 30-23 win over Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State University Saturday at Jess Dow Field.
More than midway through the third quarter, the Pioneers (7-0, 6-0 NE-10), who trailed 13-7 at the break, needed just three plays to take their first lead of the game. After a
Nate Feliz (Bronx, N.Y.) interception put the visitors in the red zone, senior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.) rushed for a go-ahead three-yard touchdown, making it a 14-13 game.
Southern Connecticut (3-4, 3-3 NE-10) then went back in front (16-14) on an early fourth-quarter field goal by Joe Rice (Union Beach, N.J.), before LIU Post responded on its next series.
Kidd completed four straight passes on the drive, the last of which was a 45-yard strike in the end zone to red-shirt junior wide receiver
Kyle Ward (Elizabeth, N.J.). That gave the Pioneers a 20-16 cushion.
From there, LIU Post did not let its foot off the gas pedal. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to a 33-yard field goal from sophomore kicker
Joey Tolgyesi (Miami, Fla.) to widen the gap to 23-16.
The Pioneers eventually owned a two-possession lead late in the fourth quarter. A 16-yard hook-up between Kidd and red-shirt senior wide receiver
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) widened the green and gold's advantage to 30-16 at the 3:32 mark.
Though the Owls managed to close the gap to 30-23 in the final two minutes, red-shirt junior wideout
James Higgins (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) recovered the subsequent onside kick to seal the victory.
Kidd finished his day 19-of-28 passing for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Hubbard posted eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back
David White (Bronx, N.Y.) rushed for 64 yards.
Feliz recorded a game-high-tying 10 tackles (seven solo, three assist) in the win. Senior outside linebacker
Ryan Renfroe (Oakdale, N.Y.) and sophomore linebacker
Connor Farrell (Holtsville, N.Y.) made eight tackles apiece. Red-shirt junior defensive back
Jared Chester (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added six tackles (two solo, four assist), one interception and a fumble recovery.
Head Coach
Bryan Collins and his LIU Post squad return to the gridiron next Saturday (Oct. 22), when they host American International College for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y.
