ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2016) - On Thursday night, the No. 2 LIU Post men's soccer team won a hard-fought 3-2 overtime decision against East Coast Conference foe Molloy College at the Rockville Centre Sports Complex.
Junior midfielder
Harry Pearse (London, England) tallied the game-winner in the 95th minute, after one-timing a
Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, Wales, United Kingdom) pass into the top-left corner of the net. The goal was set up by a long run from sophomore midfielder
Charlie Ledula (London, England), who beat a defender for a 3-on-1 opportunity.
In the first half, it didn't take long for the Pioneers (12-0-1, 5-0-1 ECC) to grab the early lead. Just 1:21 into the contest, junior back
Johan Mauritzson (Halmstad, Sweden) scored off a Pearse rebound to stake the green and gold to a 1-0 advantage.
The Lions (9-3, 6-1 ECC) responded quickly though, as senior forward Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) tapped in an Anthony Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) cross for the equalizer in the 16th minute.
LIU Post would eventually re-gain its one-goal lead in the 24th minute, when Ledula beat Molloy sophomore goalie Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) from just inside the 18-yard box.
However, in the second half, the Lions tied things up again. This time, senior forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) found the mesh for the game-tying goal with 11:20 remaining in regulation.
Despite allowing the two tallies, senior goalkeeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) made a game-high four saves for the Pioneers.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and his LIU Post squad return to the pitch Saturday (Oct. 22), when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC clash at 2:30 p.m. at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.
