BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2016) - On Saturday, the No. 11 LIU Post football team captured the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title with a 35-17 rout of Pace University at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
It is the Pioneers' (9-0, 8-0 NE-10) first regular-season conference title since 2011. The win also guarantees that LIU Post will host the 2016 NE-10 Championship on Saturday, Nov. 12.
Trailing 3-0 late in the first quarter, a Pace (0-9, 0-8 NE-10) punt from deep in its own territory gave the Pioneers the ball at the Setters' 45-yard line. Senior running back
David White (Bronx, N.Y.) then ripped off a pair of 13-yard runs, the latter of which gave the green and gold a 7-3 cushion with 1:08 remaining.
In the second quarter, LIU Post used the ground game again to widen its lead. Midway through the period, the duo of White and red-shirt sophomore running back
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.) combined for 30 rushing yards to put the Pioneers in the red zone.
That drive was eventually capped off by a six-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt sophomore quarterback
Michael Campbell (Howell, N.J.) to red-shirt junior wide receiver
James Higgins (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), making it a 14-3 contest.
LIU Post, which led by a 14-3 count at the break, pulled away in the third quarter. The Pioneers scored on back-to-back possessions to claim a 28-3 advantage at the 1:35 mark.
First, Pierre found the end zone on a two-yard scamper. That play was set up by a 42-yard punt return by red-shirt junior wide receiver
Kyle Ward (Elizabeth, N.J.) to the Setters' 13-yard line.
White followed that up with an eight-yard touchdown run, after Campbell orchestrated an 11-play, 81-yard drive that started at his own 19-yard line.
White finished with a game-high 117 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Pierre took 11 handoffs for 41 yards and a pair of TD's.
Meanwhile, Campbell completed 24-of-30 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Red-shirt senior wide receiver
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) made seven receptions for 46 yards.
Red-shirt senior defensive back
Kareem Folkes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior linebacker
Kamani Odrick (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Pioneer defense with seven tackles apiece. Red-shirt junior defensive lineman
Anthony DeNunzio (Seaford, N.Y.) and red-shirt junior defensive back
Jared Chester (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each had six tackles. DeNunzio also broke up a pass and added a quarterback hurry.
