DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2016) - Trailing 3-0 at the half, the No. 4 LIU Post men's soccer team rallied to draw even with Mercy College, 3-3, in an East Coast Conference match Saturday at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-3-2, 2-3-1 ECC), who had three tallies on five shots in the first 45 minutes, got goals from Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif.) and Haxhi Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y.) to take a commanding lead.
However, the momentum turned in the other direction in the latter session. A red card issued to Mercy's Jose Carvajal (Levittown, N.Y.) in the 60th minute set the stage for an LIU Post comeback.
Following Carvajal's foul in the box that resulted in an ejection, graduate midfielder
Alex Billington (Preston, England) stepped to the spot and converted on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Less than a minute later, senior forward
Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, Wales, United Kingdom) fed a cross to sophomore midfielder
Charlie Ledula (London, England), who subsequently fired a shot into the right corner of the net, making it a 3-2 game.
The Pioneers weren't done yet. In the 71st minute, red-shirt junior midfielder
Erik Berthagen (Gothenburg, Sweden) headed a
Harry Pearse (London, England) corner kick past Mavericks' junior goalie Kwantarian Van der Lara (Conway, Ark.) for the equalizer.
From there, LIU Post outshot Mercy, 13-1, for the remainder of the contest, including the two overtime periods. Yet, Van der Lara stopped all three shots on target for the Mavericks to secure a tie.
Between the pipes, senior goalie
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) made three saves in the effort. His scoreless streak came to a close at 466:15.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers continue their five-game road trip on Friday (Oct. 14), when they travel to Rochester for a 7:30 p.m. opening kick at ECC nemesis Roberts Wesleyan College.
