BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's basketball team held on for a 64-62 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College in East Coast Conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers (5-17, 5-9 ECC) earned their third-straight victory, while the Spartans (13-9, 6-8 ECC) dropped their fourth decision in a row.
Tied at 14-all late in the first quarter, senior forward
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) hit a lay-up with 45 seconds to go to give the Pioneers a 16-14 lead entering the second.
Midway through the second quarter, Davis converted a lay-up to extend the green and gold's advantage to 28-21, their largest lead of the period. LIU Post eventually brought a 29-25 edge into the break.
In the third, the Spartans got within two multiple times, but the Pioneers soon widened the gap to nine points (47-38) on a pair of free throws by junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.).
In the final seconds of the quarter, sophomore guard
Naya Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) beat the buzzer to give LIU Post a 49-42 cushion entering the fourth.
It was senior guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) that took over in the final 10-minute session, scoring 11 points and having an answer each time the Spartans got within striking distance.
The defense then put together back-to-back stops in the final 10 seconds of regulation to seal the Pioneers' third-consecutive win.
Gibbs finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Messam added 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) contributed nine points and four assists.

Deirdre Moore and her Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 10), when they host Molloy College in an ECC battle in Brookville. The opening tip is slated for 5 p.m.
