LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2016) - On the final day of LIU Post baseball's five-game, four-day Spring Break trip, the Pioneers earned a walk-off 8-7 win over Bloomfield College at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
The Pioneers improved to 6-7 overall, while the Bears fell to 1-3.
LIU Post got off to a quick start, as senior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) singled home sophomore centerfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) in the first to give the green and gold a 1-0 edge.
Bloomfield then scored three in the third to go ahead 3-1.
In the bottom of the inning, junior designated hitter
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) drove in sophomore shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.), making it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Bears added a run in the fourth and fifth off freshman starter
James Varela (Levittown, N.Y.) to take a 5-2 lead.
LIU Post responded with a run on an Andreoli sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to 5-3.
In the seventh, Bloomfield tacked on a pair of runs with an two-run double, extending its advantage to 7-3.
The next inning, Groeneveld plated a run with a double and junior catcher
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached on an infield single that scored another run. Entering the ninth, the Pioneers trailed 7-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs. Spitaleri drew a walk to score a run, before Groeneveld tied it with a sacrifice fly. After Fagan was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases with two outs, freshman right fielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) beat out an infield single that allowed the game-winning run to score.
Varela went five, allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Senior
Dillon Burke (Plainview, N.Y.) allowed two runs on two hits in three innings in relief. Graduate
J.P. Lipovac (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first win as a Pioneer.
Andreoli, Spitaleri, Groeneveld, and Fagan all had multi-hit games. Groeneveld drove in three runs, while Andreoli and Spitaleri scored a pair each.
