CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 6, 2016) - The LIU Post softball team got its 2016 season off on the right foot Sunday, defeating University of the Sciences, 8-0, and Post University, 7-2, at the PFX Spring Games at the National Training Center.

Game #1 - LIU Post 8, U. Sciences 0 - F/5
Scoreless after three innings of play, the Pioneers broke the game open in the top of the fourth, plating all eight of their runs in the frame.

LIU Post sent 11 players to bat in the inning, seven of whom got hits. Senior infielder Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.), junior outfielder Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) and freshman infielder Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) all had two-RBI singles in the eight-run effort. Sophomore outfielder Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.), who went 3-for-3 in the opener, added an RBI single, as well.

In the circle, junior pitcher Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) tossed five shutout innings of five-hit, one-walk, six-strikeout ball. She stranded six Devils' (0-1) runners, including five in scoring position.

Game #2 - LIU Post 7, Post 2
In the nightcap, the Pioneers (2-0) struck first again. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Palmeri came home for the contest's first run on an Eagles' (2-2) fielding error.

Then, in the third inning, LIU Post put up a four-spot to widen its lead to 5-0. Swantek drove a bases-clearing, two-RBI double to dead center to get the scoring started in the frame.

Lastly, in the fourth, freshman catcher Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) crushed her first collegiate homer, a solo shot to right-center, while Swantek ripped an RBI single to make it a 7-0 game.

In her debut, freshman pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) retired 12 of the first 13 batters she faced. Olshevski fanned two batters and yielded just one earned run in a complete-game showing.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to action Monday (Mar. 7), when they take on Holy Family University and Wilmington University in Clermont at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
