CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 7, 2016) - The LIU Post softball team earned a split at the PFX Spring Games Monday night, falling to Holy Family University, 2-0, before edging Wilmington University, 4-2, at the National Training Center.
Game #1: LIU Post 0, Holy Family 2During the opener, a tough second inning for junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) was all it took to decide the contest.
Martin surrendered back-to-back RBI singles to sophomore outfielder Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J.) and senior infielder Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J.), staking the Tigers (2-1) to an early 2-0 lead.
For Holy Family, junior pitcher Bailey Walters (Ridgefield, Calif.) tossed seven shutout frames of two-hit, four-walk, two-strikeout ball.
The Pioneers threatened in the sixth inning though, putting the tying runner on base with two out. However, Walters induced a groundout from senior first baseman
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) to remain unscathed.
Despite pitching a complete game, Martin was saddled with her first loss of the year. She allowed two runs, six hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Game #2: LIU Post 4, Wilmington (Del.) 2Tied 2-2 in the nightcap, LIU Post (3-1) grabbed the lead for good in the fifth, when junior outfielder
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) scored junior
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) from third. Two batters later, freshman shortstop
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) laced an RBI double to left-center for an insurance run.
The Wildcats (3-5), who earlier came back from a two-run deficit, put the tying runners on in the sixth inning with two out. Yet, freshman pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) staved off the Wilmington rally, as she got Caitlyn Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) to hit a grounder to second to end the frame.
The Pioneers jumped on the board first in the contest, behind an
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) first-inning RBI double. Shortly thereafter, freshman catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) came home on a passed ball, making it a 2-0 game.
Olshevski went the distance in obtaining her second win of the season. She yielded seven hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk with a pair of strikeouts in the effort.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad continue their Florida trip Wednesday (Mar. 9), when they square off with Le Moyne College and Felician College under the lights at the National Training Center at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
