BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2016) - On Sunday, the LIU Post softball team took two games from No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University, winning by 2-0 and 6-4 decisions, in a non-conference twinbill at the LIU Post Softball Complex.

Game #1: LIU Post 2, Southern New Hampshire 0
Junior pitcher Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) stole the show in the opener, throwing a four-hit complete-game shutout with five strikeouts. She allowed just two runners to reach scoring position in the first six innings.

Martin ran into her only trouble of the day in the seventh. After a throwing error put the tying runner on with none away, she fanned the last two batters to face her, including a bases-loaded strikeout to end the contest.

LIU Post got both of its runs in the sixth. Freshman shortstop Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead run, beating the tag on a fielder's choice by senior third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.).

Senior designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single up the middle, plating sophomore outfielder Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) for an insurance run.

Game #2: LIU Post 6, Southern New Hampshire 4
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, freshman first baseman Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) put the Pioneers (22-7-1) in front for good, lining a three-run homer over the centerfield fence.

Though the Penmen (16-9) got a run back in their half of the third, LIU Post put up another three-spot in the last of the fourth inning to widen the gap to 6-2.

Following a lead-off double by Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and a four-pitch walk to Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.), Mele flared a two-RBI single into shallow left-center field, making it a 5-2 game.

Two batters later, freshman catcher Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) ripped an RBI single through the right side to bring around Mele, capping off the Pioneers' scoring for the afternoon.

In the circle, freshman pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) yielded seven hits and four runs and fanned two in a complete-game effort.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad return to action Tuesday (Apr. 12), when they face New York Institute of Technology in an ECC doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. in Old Westbury.
