BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2016) - Behind a four-hit, four-RBI day from freshman right fielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.), the LIU Post baseball team defeated Concordia College, 11-4, in a non-conference tilt Wednesday at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.
The Clippers (12-24) scored three early runs off freshman starter
James Varela (Levittown, N.Y.), before the Pioneer bats got going.
Already with a double to his credit, Brehm smacked a two-run double to bring the Pioneers (18-19) within one at 3-2.
Then, in the fifth, the freshman laced a single to center, plating two more runs and putting the green and gold ahead for good, 4-3.
In the sixth, the Pioneers bats came alive once again, this time for four runs on four hits. Sophomore
Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) crushed a double off the wall in center, some 400 feet away from the plate, scoring a pair. Fellow sophomore
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) plated Doria with a hustle double to left-center, and junior center fielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) drove in a run with an infield single.
Concordia added a run in the top of the eighth, but the Pioneers weren't done.
With one out, junior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) singled home Spitaleri. Senior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) followed with his team-leading fourth homer of the season, making it 11-4.
Senior pitcher
Mike Curti (Oceanside, N.Y.) worked three hitless innings to earn his first win of the season. Sophomore reliever
Dave Anholzer (West Islip, N.Y.) allowed one run over three innings out of the bullpen to pick up his first career save.
Spitaleri, Groeneveld, Daley, and Brehm all had multi-hit games. In all, the Pioneers pounded out 15 hits, tying a season-high.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his Pioneers return to the diamond on Saturday (Apr. 30), when they head to Pleasantville to take on Pace University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for Game One is set for 1 p.m.
