PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Pace University, winning the opener, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 2-1, in eight innings at Finnerty Field in Pleasantville.

In the first game, a Lou Doria (Wantagh, N.Y.) double in the top of the second gave the Pioneers (19-20) a 1-0 lead.

The Setters (26-18) tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the inning, but the tie wouldn't last long.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore shortstop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to center, scoring junior center fielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) for the go-ahead run.

Junior starter Jake DeCarli's (Higganum, Conn.) day ended after four innings of one-run ball. The righty allowed just two hits and struck out five in the brief outing.

Fellow junior pitcher Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) earned the win with five scoreless innings in relief. Jagiello also allowed just two hits, while striking out six to pick up his team-leading sixth win.

In the second game, senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) doubled home Spitaleri in the first for an early 1-0 lead.

Pace tied it an inning later off starter Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.).

Arena and Pace's Josh Garran matched zeros for the next five innings, as the teams would need extras to find a winner.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth, Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y.) reached on an error by senior second baseman Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) that allowed the game-winning run to score.

Red-shirt freshman Robert Paccione (Commack, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss. The righty allowed the one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers are back in action on Sunday (May 1), when they host Pace in another non-conference tilt at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
