GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2016) - The ninth-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 2-1, in the Pioneers' final game of the Adelphi Alumni Invitational, held at Motamed Field Saturday in Garden City.
The Pioneers (2-0) were outshot by the Owls (1-1), 15-14, but the green and gold held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
After scoring the game-winning goal on opening night to beat Adelphi, sophomore forward
Charlie Ledula (London, England) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second game of the season. In the 10th minute, senior forward
Maxime Devillaz (Stehag, Sweden) sent a cross into the box that found the head of Ledula for the early 1-0 lead.
The Owls held an 8-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, but senior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) made three saves to keep the Pioneers ahead at the break.
In the 51st minute, senior forward
Sean Collins (Sowerby Bridge, England) netted his first goal as a Pioneer. Junior midfielder
Harry Pearse (London, England) found senior forward
Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, North Wales, U.K.), who sent a cross into the box that Collins finished.
From there, Malmstrom made saves in the 68th and 73rd minutes to keep the Pioneers ahead.
The Owls managed a goal in the 87th minute, but their rally fell short, as the green and gold closed out the victory.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Thursday (Sept. 8), when they take on Merrimack College, as part of the Purple Knight Classic, hosted by University of Bridgeport. The opening kick is slated for 4 p.m.
