MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 26, 2017) - On Sunday, the LIU Post baseball team closed out the 2017 Northeast Challenge with a 6-2 victory over No. 12 Franklin Pierce University in Myrtle Beach.
Freshman pitcher
Noah Lorenzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) threw his second-straight complete game in the win. He allowed just six hits, two runs and one walk with four strikeouts.
Trailing 2-1 through two innings, the Pioneers (6-3) capitalized on a pair of miscues by the Ravens (2-3) in the third to re-take the lead.
Sophomore outfielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.), who reached base on an infield error, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, giving LIU Post a 3-2 advantage.
Then, in the fifth, sophomore first baseman
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered a two-out RBI single to expand the Pioneers' cushion to 4-2.
Vaglica wasn't done there. He ripped a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the seventh, which capped the scoring for the contest.
Lorenzo retired the last 12 hitters he faced in order to shut the door on Franklin Pierce. He also got out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the fifth.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his LIU Post squad return to action on Saturday (Mar. 4), when they open the home portion of their 2017 schedule with a doubleheader against Bloomfield College. First pitch is set for noon.
