BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2017) - On Tuesday, the LIU Post softball team earned a split against No. 25 Caldwell University in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
The Pioneers (15-15) suffered a 7-1 defeat in the opener, before bouncing back with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
Game #1: LIU Post 1, No. 25 Caldwell 7
Down 3-0 in the opener, the Pioneers got an RBI single from junior infielderĀ
Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second to close the gap to a two-run game.
Then, in the third, LIU Post put the tying runs on base, after a
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) lead-off walk and an
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) single.
The Pioneers were unable to drive them in though, as Cougars' senior pitcher Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J.) retired the next three hitters in order to stall the comeback bid.
Sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was tagged with the loss in the decision. She threw seven innings of nine-hit, seven-run, five-walk, two-strikeout ball.
Game #2: LIU Post 7, No. 25 Caldwell 4
Tied 3-3 in the nightcap, the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to grab their largest lead of the day at 7-3.
Seader had a two-RBI double in the frame. Junior outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) laced an RBI single, while junior outfielder
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Cougars (23-10) cut into the deficitĀ in the fifth with a Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, N.J.) solo homer, but freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) held the visitors off the board in the final two innings to preserve the victory for LIU Post.
In the circle, Humhej won her third decision of 2017, tossing a complete game. She scattered four hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks and fanned a pair in her outing.
