BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2017) - On Thursday, the LIU Post softball team picked up a crucial sweep of University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
The Pioneers (17-15, 5-5 ECC) earned a 4-0 win in the opener, before battling to a hard-fought 11-7 victory in the nightcap.
Game #1: LIU Post 4, Bridgeport 0
In the opener, sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) stymied the Purple Knights' offense, allowing just five hits and no walks with one strikeout.
Olshevski's clean sheet was her fourth of the 2017 season and the ninth shutout of her career.
Meanwhile, the Pioneers broke out for all four of their runs in the bottom of the third, led by a three-run homer from sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.).
Senior pitcher Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) took the loss in the decision for Bridgeport. She threw six innings of eight-hit, four-run, one-walk, four-strikeout ball in her outing.
Game #2: LIU Post 11, Bridgeport 7
In the nightcap, the Pioneers got out to a quick start, plating four runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
The hosts capitalized on a pair of errors to score a pair of runs, while freshman third baseman
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) drove in two runs with a single down the first-base line.
The green and gold eventually led 7-2 through five innings, until Bridgeport (16-15, 5-7 ECC) rallied with a four-run sixth to close the gap to a one-run game (7-6).
However, LIU Post fired back with a four-spot of its own in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for the victory.
Freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) led off the frame with a solo homer to left. Fellow freshman
Allie Laird (Holbrook, N.Y.) contributed a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) posted her second-consecutive win, tossing 5.1 innings with one strikeout. Olshevski went the final 1.2 frames for the save.
