BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2017) - On Friday, the LIU Post softball team took two games from Merrimack College, winning by scores of 4-2 and 6-5, in a non-conference twinbill at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Game #1: LIU Post 4, Merrimack 2
In the opener, sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) thwarted the Warriors' offense, letting up just one earned run in a complete-game effort.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third, the Pioneers answered back by scoring two runs in the bottom half. Sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) launched back-to-back solo home runs to give the green and gold a 2-1 advantage.
Though Merrimack came back to tie the game in the fifth, the Pioneers immediately responded with two more runs to re-take the lead. A pair of fifth-inning doubles by sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior first baseman
Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) put the hosts in front for good.
Olshevski, who improved to 11-4 with a 1.77 ERA in 2017, tallied five strikeouts and allowed no walks, en route to earning her 13th complete game of the season.
Game #2: LIU Post 6, Merrimack 5
Down 3-0 in the nightcap, the Pioneers (19-15) exploded for three runs in the bottom of the first to quickly tie the score.
Melendez picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the inning, while freshman shortstop
Allie Laird (Holbrook, N.Y.) lined a game-tying RBI single to right.
In the fourth, Fortin gave LIU Post the lead with a go-ahead RBI single. She later contributed a one-out solo homer to right-center in the sixth to widen the gap to 6-3.
The Warriors (21-10) eventually fought back in the seventh and pulled within a run at 6-5, but freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) buckled down and induced a pair of groundouts to end the game.
Humhej recorded her third-consecutive victory in the decision, pitching seven innings of seven-hit, five-run (three earned), two-walk, five-strikeout ball. It was also Humhej's second complete game in her last three starts.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the field Monday (Apr. 17), when they face St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. in Brookville.
