DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2017) - The LIU Post baseball team completed a season sweep of East Coast Conference rival Mercy College Sunday with a 2-1 victory at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry.
The result improves the Pioneers to 24-16 overall and 14-6 in ECC play. It is also the team's fourth-consecutive win and seventh victory in their last eight games.
Tied 1-1 late in the contest, the green and gold broke through for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth.
Following back-to-back hits by
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to start the inning, freshman first baseman
Zach Fritz (East Meadow, N.Y.) drew a walk to fill the bases.
Two batters later, sophomore outfielder
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) hit into a one-out fielder's choice that scored Andreoli for the go-ahead run.
Freshman pitcher
Noah Lorenzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) threw eight brilliant innings, scattering three hits, one run and two walks with three strikeouts. He retired nine straight batters at one point in the contest.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) tossed a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout, en route to earning his league-leading ninth save of 2017.
Vaglica, Andreoli and junior shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) all had two hits apiece in the win for the Pioneers, who limited the Mavericks (10-27, 4-16 ECC) to just three hits on the day.
