BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post baseball team dropped its doubleheader against Assumption College Sunday afternoon at the LIU Post baseball field, falling 5-4 in the first game and 11-7 in extras in the second.
Despite the losses, senior
Anthony Vaglica had an outstanding day for the Pioneers as he went 6-for-8 with three runs, a double and two RBI. Redshirt junior
Andy Camilo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, senior
Michael Greene added two hits, a triple and a run while sophomore
Christopher Wasson finished with two hits, two RBIs and one run.
On the mound, junior
Mike Stiles struck out eight in seven innings while junior Julian Arcos pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four.
Game One – Assumption 5, LIU Post 4
LIU Post got off to a strong start in game one after Stiles fanned five batters in the first three innings. Wasson scored after senior
Michael Manzione singled to left field and Manzione scored following a Vaglica double down the left field line to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.
The Greyhounds' first run came in the top of the sixth but it was not until the top of the eighth they took their first lead, jumping ahead 4-2. The Pioneers bounced back in the bottom of the eighth to make it a tied game after freshman
David Franchi ripped a single up the middle that scored Vaglica; Wasson then scored Franchi after he singled to center field.
Assumption added another run in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead and while two Pioneers got on base after being hit pitches they ended the frame without scoring a run.
Game One – Assumption 11, LIU Post 7
The Greyhounds raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth in game two but the Pioneers responded with their first run in the bottom of the fourth after sophomore
Jahsiah Greene flew out to left field and Vaglica scored.
Assumption added another run in the top of the fifth but the Pioneers took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth after Camilo ripped a triple down the left field line that scored Vaglica, sophomore
Daniel Keane and Brehm.
An Assumption throwing error in the bottom of the sixth saw Wasson reach and Greene score, giving LIU Post a 6-5 advantage. The Greyhounds then added another run, sending the seven-inning game into extras.
In the top of the ninth Assumption took an 11-6 lead and while Brehm scored in the bottom of the ninth, the Greyhounds held on for the 11-7 victory.
