Women's Soccer Earns Sixth Straight Win, Downing St. Thomas Aquinas 7-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2008)- The C.W. Post Pioneers captured another conference win as the downed opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College 7-0 Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improved their record to 12-1 overall, and 5-0 in the East Coast Conference while the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans fall to 2-9-2 overall, and 0-4-1 in the ECC.
Sophomore Sanna Pettersson (Fellingsbro, Sweden) started the Pioneers off just two minutes into the first half as she headed the ball into the top left corner off a pass from teammate Caitlin Mullady (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Senior Maria Sonnerborg (Bjarred, Sweden) found the back of the net just over three minutes later as she scored another header for the Pioneers, increasing her team's lead to 2-0. Sonnerborg would go on a scoring frenzy, netting three more goals over a span of thirty minutes, putting the Pioneers up 5-0. She finished the afternoon with four goals, totaling 12 goals for the season.
Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season unassisted at the 52 minute mark, off a rebound from St. Thomas Aquinas goalie Cynthia Campion. Sophomore Samantha Barbero (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) notched her first goal of the season off a corner from freshman Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) to round out the afternoon for the Pioneers, making the final score 7-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Deanna Esposito (Sayville, N.Y.) faced three shots on goal for the afternoon to earn the shutout and clinch the win for C.W. Post. Esposito improved her personal record to 5-1, nabbing her third shutout of the season. Spartan keeper Cynthia Campion had 11 saves in net.
C.W. Post outshot the Spartans 30-5 on the afternoon. The Pioneers also held a 3-0 edge in corners.
C.W. Post will look to continue their winning streak Saturday afternoon as they travel to neighboring NYIT for a conference match at noon.
