OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2008)- The C.W. Post women's soccer team improved its winning streak to seven games as they shut out neighboring ECC rival NYIT 2-0 Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improved their record to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the ECC while the Bears fall to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.
Senior Maria Sonnerborg (Bjarred, Sweden) put the Pioneers on the board 19:45 into the first half as she nabbed a loose ball and found the back of the net to give C.W. Post a 1-0 lead. The goal was Sonnerborg's fifth this week, as she previously scored four goals in the Pioneers 7-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas earlier this week. She now leads her team with 13 goals and four assists this season.
Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden) tallied her fifth goal of the season to ensure the win for the Pioneers less than five minutes after Sonnerborg's goal. Eriksson received a ball from sophomore Sanna Pettersson (Fellingsbro, Sweden) as she beat NYIT keeper Kathryn Miller, finding the lower left corner of the net. The goal improved Eriksson's personal stats to four goals and two assists this season. Both teams held each other scoreless for the remainder of the first half and the entire second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) tallied the win for C.W. Post facing one shot on net and capturing her fifth shutout of the season. Weiser's personal record improved to 7-0 overall. NYIT keeper Kathryn Miller made one save for the Bears, but the effort wasn't enough to bring her team out on top.
C.W. Post is back in action again Monday afternoon as the travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace University at 3 p.m.
