BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2008)- The Pioneers struck hard and struck often as senior Maria Sonnerborg (Kumla, Sweden) and sophomore Sanna Pettersson (Fellingsbro, Sweden) each tallied a hat trick Saturday afternoon to lead the sixth-ranked Pioneers to a 7-0 win over East Coast Conference rival Concordia College.
Sonnerborg scored the first of her three girls 8:25 into the first half off a feed from teammate Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden). She put C.W. Post onto the board again six minutes later after receiving the ball from sophomore Danielle DeLuca (Islip, N.Y.), giving her team a two goal cushion. Sonnerborg struck again just four minutes later as she knocked the ball off the left post, putting the Pioneers up 3-0.
Babic notched a goal for herself 19:24 into the first quarter, tallying her eighth goal of the season. Babic finished the afternoon with one goal and two assists for C.W. Post.
Pettersson then started her own scoring frenzy, as she found the back of the net 37:03 into the first half, giving the Pioneers a four goal lead going into halftime. She then capitalized on a penalty kick at the beginning of the second half, raising the score to 6-0. Pettersson scored her third and final goal of the afternoon 57:59 into the second half as she took a fifteen yard shot off a feed from sophomore Samantha Barbero (Massapequa Park, N.Y.).
Sophomore goalkeeper Deanna Esposito (Sayville, N.Y.) made her fourth start of the season in net, earning the win for the Pioneers. She made two saves for the afternoon, ensuring her second shutout of the season. Concordia goalkeeper Aileen Alvear faced nine shots on goal, making two saves in net for the Clippers.
The Pioneers outshot Concordia 12-3. They also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The C.W. Post Pioneers will be back in action Monday, October 6 as they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on East Coast Conference rival Mercy College at 3 p.m.
