Softball Announces 2009 Captains
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2008) – The C.W. Post softball coaching staff has announced its captains for the 2009 season. The team will be led by senior
Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), and juniors
Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.).
The Pioneers posted a program-best 48 wins in 2008 and clinched the NCAA Northeast Regional title and advanced to the College World Series for the second straight year.
A three-year starter, Correia was named tabbed ECC All-Conference in 2007. At the plate, she collected 32 hits and came around to score 14 times. Seeing most of her playing time at third, Correia recorded her best defensive stats in 2008, tallying 112 assists while committing just five errors.
“Since Megan stepped onto campus she has had a meticulous approach to developing her skills,” remarked Apicella. “She is a true student of the game and the example she sets on the field is a true testament to her commitment to the program. She is committed to empowering her fellow teammates to reach their potential and try to challenge them to exceed that potential and get the most out of their abilities.”
Medina, a two-time ECC First Team and NFCA/Louisville Slugger First Team All-Region selection, had one of the best seasons in Pioneers history from her leadoff spot in the batting order, batting .427 with 91 hits, 22 RBI and 36 stolen bases. Her .474 on base percentage was tops on the team along with her 56 runs scored. Medina also made only one error all season in center field.
“Melissa has learned over her two years as a Pioneer softball player that ability only gets you so far and that the chemistry of a team is just as important or more important, “says Apicella. “She understands that a lot of hard work goes into playing at a high level and Melissa has a knack for understanding people. Her tireless approach to be the best has a lasting effect on all her teammates.”
Softy had a tremendous sophomore campaign in 2008 where she started all 64 games and hit .316 with 67 hits while driving in 47 runs. She led the Pioneers with 14 doubles and garnered NFCA/Louisville Slugger and ECC First Team recognition.
“Christie brings a fun loving approach to the game that she is truly passionate about,” says Apicella. “Her skills come very natural to her and her teammates are truly amazed of what she can do on the softball field. She leads by example and tries everyday to make her teammates understand it is about the love of the game that they are out there working hard every day.”
C.W. Post opens its season on Feb. 27 at the Catawba Tournament in Salisbury, N.C.
