Football Claims First PSAC Win At Cheyney, 35-0

CHEYNEY , Pa. (Sept. 20, 2008) – Sophomore tailback
Jason Gwaltney (North Babylon, N.Y.) rushed in three touchdowns as C.W. Post scored five touchdowns to defeat Cheyney University, 35-0, during Saturday afternoon's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference fooball contest at O'Sheilds-Stevenson Stadium.
The Pioneers, who posted their first shutout since Sept. 8, 2007 at Pace University, improve to 1-3 overall and are 1-0 in the Eastern Division. Cheyney loses its fourth straight game and falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The win also improved head coach
Bryan Collins' overall career record to 85-29, making him the all-time winningest football coach at C.W. Post.
Gwaltney recorded 148 yards on 25 carries - his longest a 37-yard run in the fourth quarter – to lead all rushers in the game.
Freshman
Quillian Respass (Huntington Station, N.Y.), making his first start of the season as quarterback, completed 10 of 16 pass attempts for 175 yards with one interception.
The Pioneers made quick work in the first quarter when Gwaltney scored the game's first touchdown fourth-and-goal from the Cheyney 1-yard line at 11:11. Senior kicker
Andrew Kroell (Baldwin, N.Y.) kicked a successful point after and the Pioneers led, 7-0.
The Wolves were able to hold stop the Pioneers' progression during their next possession and forced the ball over on downs after a 13 play, 44-yard drive.
The offense continued in the second quarter when C.W. Post capitalized on a botched punt attempt that sophomore defensive back
Juma McKenley (Bronx, N.Y.) caught and returned from Cheyney's 12 for an 88-yard touchdown at 13:08 in second quarter.
The Pioneers second touchdown of the quarter was part of a seven play, 53-yard drive that began at the Cheyney 37. On 2nd-and-28 after a holding pass was assessed to the Pioneers, Respass completed a 25-yard pass to senior wide receiver
Chris Harris (Islip, N.Y.) that brought the ball to the Cheyney 4-yard line. The drive culminated with a four-yard pass from Georgetti to senior tight end
Dennis Vanella (North Babylon, N.Y.).
At the end of the half, the Pioneers tallied 235 total offensive yards on 33 plays while holding the Wolves to just 33 offensive yards on 26 plays. C.W. Post went 3 for 7 on third down conversions and 2 for 3 on fourth down.
In the third quarter, C.W. Post scored on its first drive on eight plays and 64 yards that resulted in one yard rushing touchdown from Vanella at 11:24
Gwaltney rushed in his second touchdown of the game with 8:12 remaining in the fourth quarter from Cheyney's 3-yard line for the game's final score.
The Pioneers totaled 434 yards of offense and was 5 for 11 on third down conversions in the game. The defense held the Wolves to just 66 yards during the game.
Harris completed the game with four catches for 83 yards. Junior wide receiver
Ryan Pettys (Long Beach, Calif.) caught one pass for 43 yards.
Cheyney quarterback Ronald Thompson completed 7 of 13 pass attempts for 26 yards while running back Chinoso Okoro led the Wolves with 16 rushing yards.
C.W. Post returns home to Hickox Field to host Bloomsburg University on Sept. 27 at 12 p.m.
