Women's Soccer Triumphs Over Mercy On Senior Day, 8-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2009)-
C.W. Post women's soccer team shut out Mercy College in an East Coast Conference matchup as the Pioneers honored their five seniors in their final home game Saturday afternoon. Five different players scored to contribute to C.W. Post's 8-0 win.
C.W. Post now improves to 11-4-1 overall, 5-1 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fall to an overall record of 3-8, 1-5 in conference play.
The Pioneers came out strong as junior Qaroline Nahl (Kumla, Sweden) scored the first goal of the contest less than three minutes into play, as she connected with forward Ivana Babic (Haninge, Sweden) to find the lower right corner of the net. Nahl returned the favor minutes later as she fed Babic who faked past Mercy keeper Kassandra Phillips (Southington, Conn.) to take an open shot and give C.W. Post a 2-0 lead.
Senior Melissa Pascarella (Sayville, N.Y.) notched her first of two goals at the 14:31 mark, as she received a feed from Babic, banking a shot into the lower left corner. Pascarella scored her second goal of the game just ten minutes later, as she headed the ball off a corner from teammate Jackie Sousa (North Reading, Mass.). C.W. Post would strike one more time in the first half, as senior midfielder Sam Boschetti (Rockaway, N.J.) found the feet of junior forward Sanna Pettersson (Orebro, Sweden) on the left side to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead at the half.
C.W. Post exploded into the second half as freshman Karin Hedlund (Brastad, Sweden) dribbled down the middle to beat Phillips and find the lower left corner less than a minute into the half. Hedlund registered another goal at 52:18, converting a feed from Boschetti into a shot in the lower left corner. Pettersson capped off the Pioneers scoring frenzy as she took as shot into the upper left corner of the net off a corner kick from teammate Tove Eriksson (Helsingborg, Sweden), putting the Pioneers ahead by a final score of 8-0.
C.W. Post goalkeepers Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) combined for the shut out in net, each seeing 45 minutes of action. Phillips made 12 saves in goal for the Mavericks.
The Pioneers outshot Mercy 27-0, and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks for the afternoon.
C.W. Post is back in action Wednesday, October 28, as they travel to Southern New Hampshire. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
