Dowling Edges Out Women's Soccer In Double Overtime, 1-0

- Dowling senior Vanessa Moreira (Selden, N.Y.) scored the game winning goal in the 108th minute to propel the Golden Lions past the C.W. Post Pioneers 1-0 in the East Coast Conference semifinal match Friday afternoon. With the win, Dowling advances to the East Coast Conference Championship against the winner of Bridgeport vs. Queens. Championship game is set to take place November 8th at the NYIT campus.
C.W. Post finishes its season with an overall record of 12-6-1, 6-2 in the ECC, while Dowling improves to 13-4-1, 6-2 in conference.
Despite a total of 29 shots taken during the first 90 minutes of play, solid defense on both sides forced the Pioneers and Golden Lions into an overtime situation. C.W. Post registered three shots in the first overtime, but was unable to find the back of the net. With less than three minutes left, Moreira capitalized on a scoring opportunity for Dowling, banking a shot into the left corner past Pioneers' keeper Allie Weiser (Grand Island, N.Y.) to capture the win for the Golden Lions.
Weiser made a total of eight saves in goal for C.W. Post. Alicia Commisso (Floral Park, N.Y.) ensured the win for Dowling with nine saves in net.
The Pioneers outshot Dowling 20-14 and held an 8-3 margin in corner kicks.
