BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 21, 2009)
– C.W. Post opened the home portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon and captured a 4-2 victory against American International College in the first game before taking the nightcap, 3-2, in eight innings.
 
The Pioneers improve to 6-6 overall this season while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-5 overall.
 
Freshman second baseman Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) went 3-for-5 in the two games, including a two-run home run in the first game.
 
In the first game, the teams played through four scoreless innings before the fifth inning when senior Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) hit a pinch hit a run-scoring double that scored junior leftfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) from second for the game's first two runs. 
 
Kerry Fisher followed with a two-run blast over the right field fence to put the Pioneers up 3-0. 
 
The offense continued during the next at-bat when senior first baseman Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) cleared the left field fence for the inning's fourth run.
 
AIC cut the deficit to two in top of the sixth when senior pitcher Ashley Deegan hit a one-run single and senior third baseman Tara DeMontier scored on fielder's choice later in the inning.
 
Sophomore pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out five batters. Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) came in the seventh inning and closed out the game for the save.
 
In the nightcap, AIC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior second baseman Michelle Franey reached first base and advanced to second on a throwing error from the second baseman. She came around to score in the inning on a ground out to the shortstop.
 
The Pioneers answered in the fourth inning when Katie Fisher singled to left center to score Kerry Fisher from third. The go-ahead run was scored when senior third baseman Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) recorded a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch runner Lindsey Trotto (Pinceton, Mass.) from third.
 
The Yellow Jackets tied the game up in the top of the seventh when freshman right fielder Sarah Calgreen homered over the right field fence. 
 
The Pioneers could not put a run across the plate and the game went to the eighth inning. Senior first baseman Kellie Brown hit a one-out single to the shortstop before Kiser came in to relieve freshman starter Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia). Kiser struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
 
In the eighth, Katie Fisher reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman and advanced to second. Correia grounded out to the shortstop, advancing Fisher to third.  The winning run was scored when freshman catcher #Kristen Morcone# (Milford, Mass.) hit a single to the left center gap that scored Fisher.
 
Bettles pitched seven and a third innings and allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out seven batters. 
 
C.W. Post will host a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against regional foe Le Moyne College on March 22 at 12 p.m.
