BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 22, 2009) –
After dropping the first game by an 8-0 count, the softball team's bats came alive in the second game as they put together a 7-2 victory to salvage a split with the 21st-ranked Le Moyne Dolphins on a brisk Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Dolphins wasted no time in jumping out to a lead, as they were right on starter Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) and pounded out three runs on five hits in the top of the first to take the lead.
A leadoff single in the second chased Berardi, and reliver Hayley Choquette-Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) gave up a two-run homer to Kelly Schweikert before settling in and holding the 'Fins scoreless until the fifth, when they touched the freshman for three runs on three hits.
The Pioneers were unable to muster much offense against Le Moyne starter Jennifer Farrelly as Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.), Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, N.J.) and Megan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) were the only three players to register hits in the game, which was ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
The nightcap saw sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) toss a gem in her first start of the season, as she scattered seven hits and allowed only two runs as she was helped by a Pioneer offense that pounded out 13 hits.
Kerry Fisher gave the Pioneers an early lead in the bottom of the first, as she hit her second home run in as many days to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
Le Moyne tied the game in the third as Bailey Phillips doubled to right center and scored on a fielding error by the right fielder.
The Dolphins took the lead in the fourth as Schweikert reached on a fielding error, stole second, and scored on Caitlin O'Neil's single to left.
Le Moyne starter Jenna Vanacore kept the Pioneers to just one run until the fifth, when the floodgates opened. With one out, Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) dropped a bunt single and moved to second on Ashley Marchese's (Hauppauge, N.Y.) single to right. A Kerry Fisher double to left center scored Medina and put Fisher on second and Marchese on third for Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) who followed with a double of her own to plate both runs. After a single by Kulnis, Correia followed with the third Pioneer double of the inning to score Lindsey Trotto (Princeton, Mass.) who pinch ran for Kulnis. Three more singles, by Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.), Amanda Aiello (Charlton, Mass.) and Medina, plated another run for the Pioneers and put them up by a 7-2 count.
The Dolphins put runners on first and second with only one out in the sixth but Kiser got two flyouts to end the threat.
Offensively, Medina paced the Pioneers with three hits, and Kerry Fisher (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Softy (2-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) and Correia (2-for-3, 1 RBI) also contributed to the hitting onslaught.
C.W. Post handed Vanacore her first loss of the season as she went 4.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and one walk. Katelyn Fowler lasted only a third of an inning and gave up three runs on four hits, before Farrelly was able to close the door and allowed no runs and only two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
With the win, Kiser improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Pioneers are in action next on March 24 as the host Mercy in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader, and again on  March 26, as they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
