Softball Takes 1-1 Split With Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 30, 2009)
– The C.W. Post softball team split a conference doubleheader against Queens College, losing game one 4-3 in eight innings before rebounding with a 11-2 win against the Knights Monday afternoon.
 
The Pioneers improve to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play while Queens slips to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in ECC action.
 
Senior first baseman Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, N.Y.) was the offensive leader in both games, combining to go 5-for-9 at the plate, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning of game two.
 
In the first game, Queens took a 1-0 lead when leftfielder Samantha Stallone scored from third on an error by the second baseman with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
 
C.W. Post got the run back in the top of the second when junior leftfielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) singled to score junior shortstop Christie Softy (Floral Park, N.Y.) from third.
 
The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead over the Knights. However, Queens tied the game with one swing of the bat from junior designated player Katie Miracco.
 
The teams played through a scoreless sixth and seventh before the game went into an extra frame. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, senior leftfielder Christina Colon drove the ball out of the park to score the game-winning run.
 
Freshman catcher Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Junior Christy Sanders earned the win, pitching the final two innings and shutting out the Pioneers. Sophomore Victoria Coan started the game and pitched five and two third innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
 
Sophomore pitcher Christina Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss, pitching seven and a third innings and allowed three earned runs while scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
 
In game two, the Pioneers staked themselves to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on a single from Marchese. Marchese later scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt from Softy. Freshman second baseman Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) scored the third run on a passed ball.
 
C.W. Post added another run in the fifth when senior third baseman Meghan Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) singled to score Kerry Fisher from third. The Pioneer offense erupted in the sixth to score four runs, including Marchese's three-run home run.
 
The Knights added two in the bottom of the sixth when junior catcher Danielle DiGioia hit a two-run double with one out.
 
The Pioneers scored their final two runs in the seventh when Kerry Fisher reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Medina and Marchese to score from second and third.
 
Sophomore Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, Fla.) took the win and allowed just two earned runs on four hits while striking out five batters and issuing two walks.
 
Sophomore Bryttne Nelson was the losing pitcher for Queens, pitching seven innings and allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits.
 
Marchese went 3-for-5 in the game and drove in four runs while coming around to score three. Kerry Fisher was also 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Medina batted 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
 
C.W. Post is back in action March 31 with a meeting at Concordia College (N.Y.).
